Simply register and come to the tryouts. WAR Athletics holds open tryouts starting in January with additional tryouts to follow for those who missed first one. A player must appear at minimum one tryout to be eligible but, obviously, the more tryouts a player can make, the better a coach has to evaluate you.
There is at least one team per age group, with more possible based on turnout in grades 3rd thru 12th. WAR Athletics does not have ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams. WAR Athletics feels all athletes deserve a chance to make a team unless the numbers make roster sizes unmanagable.
We attempt to hold tryouts where there is the least conflict but realize someone could have a high school team commitment, travel or game conflict. Please communicate with the WAR tryouts coordinator or the respective coaches if going to miss a tryout in advance and it will not be held against you.
It is expected that a player will make all the games and practices unless the coach is notified beforehand. There are always conflicts but absences disrupt the team and are unfair to the other players, coaches and teammates. Communication with the coaches is crucial about these issues if there will be an absence. Please be aware that WAR Athletics also holds our coaches and support staff to this same policy.
Every team is different, in general there are usually about 3 hours of practice a week . The practices take place at our primary location, Pine Drive Baptist Church in Dickinson, or at a location not far from there. Teams on average play in 8 to 12 weekend tournaments during the spring/summer. This number may vary above the average if there are requests to participate in "pop-up" tournaments and the players/parents are available to play. 90% of the tournaments are within driving distance (Houston/Galveston locales). Older age groups will have a specialized schedule due to college showcases, held in the summer, as the dates for many of their tournaments is determined by the NCAA.
There is an initial mandatory one-time $10 tryout fee collected along with the Tryout Registration Form. Once the fee is provided, the athlete is covered for all other tryout sessions. Completion is required of this form for all athletes, whether a returning athlete or not. We encourage you to do it on-line but can be done at the tryout. That money goes toward the expenses of running tryouts. When your son or daughter makes a team, you will be required to pay a WAR Athletics player fee of $900, which is the current seasonal registration fee.
A minimum down payment of $250 is due by the week following the confirmation of the athlete making the team. You can pay online by CashApp (https://cash.app/$Warbasketball),or by PayPal (https://paypal.me/warathletics), or via cash if desired. The down payment is part of the $900 Seasonal Registration Fee.
All new players will need to purchase a new uniform. There is a cost of $175 (which is part of the initial down payment) for a set that includes one reversible uniform, one shooting shirt, and one backpack. These items are retained by the family at the end of the season. WAR does not collect the items. If player is a returning player and they need a new uniform due to size, cleanliness, etc, the same cost applies.
Providing the initial down payment or covering the total cost up front in a timely manner reduces the chances of complications with the uniform order.
Although WAR Athletics charges an extremely competitive price, we realize there is a large financial commitment to play for the organization so we try to keep the fee as low as possible. As seen below, the fee does not cover all the costs of playing. We make up the difference with the income from holding tournaments. If tournaments do not make normal revenue, the club faces a major financial crunch.
(Please note the below breakdown is given merely as an example to show how the registration fee does not cover all expenses.) There is no such thing as a ‘team budget’. Every team’s exact outlay is different as the head coach sets the amount of practices and tournaments for each team.
Expenses per team $9,160 (avg. per player $916 real cost if 10 on team)**
Expense Breakdown (example):
$4,500 for 12 tournaments (avg. $375 per tournament)
$3,630 for Practices (22 weeks with 2 per week at 1.5 hours each equals 66 hours of practice at average rental cost of $60 per hour)
$700 for Office’ expenses, web site, equipment, coaching shirts, background checks, meetings.
** All other club administrative expenses and the shortfall from the registration fees are made up by tournament income – primarily admissions since scorekeeping and concessions are used by teams as fundraisers for additional tournaments.
Tryout Refund policy:
All tryout fees are non-refundable. If a player is picked for a team and does not tell WAR Athletics office, board, or respective coaches they do not want to participate before team is selected, the family is still liable for the fee.
Season Refund policy:
If for some reason a player will not be able to complete a season due to reasons out of their control (i.e. illness, moving etc., documentation is required), a prorated credit will be assigned for the following year. Any other arrangements must be discussed with the WAR Athletics President and Treasurer. Specific details regarding cost, payments, and / or refunds are defined in the Seasonal Contract.
The organization looks for people that: can meet the demanding time commitment, have some knowledge of the game from playing and/or coaching, and can organize and manage practices and games. Different age levels clearly need coaches with different abilities, experiences, and outlooks. If interested in being a WAR Athletics coach, email athletics.war@gmail.com
Fundraisers are a utilized by WAR Athletics for several reasons. The main ones are 1) to help offset and keep out-of-pocket costs down for parents and legal guardians on things such as special tournaments or out-of-town tournaments that may require added expenses, including but not limited to room/board and food; 2) promote personal responsibility and accountability for the athletes; and 3) to instill a family atmosphere among the athletes as they work together for a common goal.
Athlete and family participation in fundraisers can earn rebates that can be applied toward the Seasonal Fees. For example, participation support during the 2 tournaments hosted by WAR Athletics can award a rebate for up to $50 for each tournament.
Requests for donations toward concessions during the tournaments is typical although not required.
Typical fundraisers that WAR Athletics holds are:
